Welcome to Ziggy’s Lament

I have an old friend called Ziggy. Not Bowie’s Ziggy – this one is Stephen to his mum, Steve to others. Ziggy is even more obsessed with music than I am, and this Substack is inspired by and dedicated to him…

(…and Bowie’s Ziggy a little bit too.)1

Ziggy’s Lament is about music, people, places and cultures and the messy, beautiful ways in which these combine and evolve.

It’s not a muso’s blog. It may, however, be a blog that has muses and inspiration running through. And it’s definitely a place for music lovers…

There will be stories to tell. I’ll travel around a bit. Maybe pick up an album or song, or a timeframe or memory, a person or an event, and see what flows around it.

It’s about records, songs and the criss-crossing of genres and obsessions that music brings. It’s about crate-digging as a life practice.

It’s about dancing and moving and the sounds that make this happen, and the beautiful noise that makes us laugh, cry and love (and sometimes fight) and yet stays with us to the end…

I hope you’ll enjoy reading (and listening), and also, maybe, become part of a conversation with others who think music can change the world (even though it probably can’t… not on its own). Participate in the comments section, or support this Substack with a subscription.

Note on the typeface I’ve used for the Ziggy’s Lament header. If you’re a Bowie aficionado, you might recognise it. It’s Greyhound, and appears on the cover of the 50th anniversary edition of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars: The Motion Picture: https://recordcollectormag.com/reviews/album/ziggy-stardust-and-the-spiders-from-mars-the-motion-picture - Hmm, this could get very geeky…
