May 8th 2024: Music I’ve been listening to #01
1. Afrolicious – California Dreaming
From the band’s debut album, California Dreaming (find the full album playlist HERE). Released on Afrolicious Music, 2013. Recovered from my digital archives!!
2. The Shapeshifters Featuring Billy Porter - 'Finally Ready'
Gorgeous uplifting House from The Shapeshifters and the inspirational Billy Porter (HERE he is talking on Channel 4 about his life and new album, Black Mona Lisa). This track comes from the Glitterbox compilation and film Where Love Lives: A Story of Dancefloor Culture & Expression. LOVE this.
3. 22 Beaches – Dust
A new-to-me-but-old discovery on BBC 6 Music’s New Music Fix (with Tom Ravenscroft and Deb Grant) on Tuesday 7th May. A track from an upcoming retrospective compilation of Scottish post-punk outfit, 22 Beaches. Definitely one to check out on Bandcamp HERE:
4. Boulderhead – I Need Space To Dance (ft. Overnite Oates)
I found this on Bandcamp Weekly, from Bristol based Boulderhead. New to me, but funny, bouncy and very strange all at the same time! LOVE IT! On preorder HERE.
5. Kamasi Washington & Andre 3000 - Dream State
Kamasi Washington is one of the greatest jazz saxophonists, composers and arrangers of his time. His music is full-on, intense and often extraordinary. He even called his 2015 album, The Epic! Andre 3000 is best known for being part of Outkast, and recently brought out a triple album of ambient flute music. What could possibly go wrong? Nothing, as it happens. This is from Washington’s new album, Fearless Movement.
6. William The Conqueror - Tend to the Thorns
One of my favourite tracks from one of my favourite bands. They are AMAZING live so catch them if you can (Live vids HERE and HERE and Tour dates HERE)!
